Summary:

The Hartford School District (HSD) has a strong reputation for quality programs and great employee relationships in the “Upper Valley” in the Vermont and New Hampshire region. The HSD exists as a single-town district with one school board, three elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, and a Career and Technology Center. In addition, the HSD contains three separate collaborative programs: the Regional Alternative Program, the Hartford Autism Regional Program, and the Regional Resource Center. The HSD has an annual school budget of roughly $50 million and serves approximately 1850 students. Dothan Brook School is a grades PK-5 school of approximately 240 students dedicated to the development of the ‘whole’ child. We are an inclusive, energetic, and creative community that is committed to academic and personal growth. As a learning community, we are united and enthusiastic about empowering our young learners.

The Principal will need to thoroughly enjoy and be committed to all aspects of elementary learners and be able to prioritize relationships with students, families, and staff. Additionally, this individual will work in close collaboration and partnership with other district leaders to maintain vertical and horizontal alignment of district priorities aligned with our ENDS policies and Vision of a Graduate.

Qualifications:

  • Current Vermont administrative license with Principal endorsement (3-91) or eligible for Vermont Provisional endorsement (required).
  • Master’s degree in educational administration or related areas (preferred).
  • Minimum of five years successful teaching experience and three years school administration or equivalent leadership experience (preferred).
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills; ability to facilitate individual and organizational change processes.
  • Evidence of personal professional development, a commitment to lifelong learning, and knowledge of current best practices in education.
  • Commitment to the district’s mission and strategic plan.

Successful candidates will demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to collaborate closely with all stakeholders to create a supportive and authentic learning environment for our learners
  • A thorough understanding and deep experience with best practices in equity, trauma, and instruction
  • Knowledge of IDEA requirements and experience collaborating with other professionals to ensure meaningful inclusion for students with disabilities, including those who are eligible for 504s and IEPs
  • Work to cultivate a continuous learning community that uses data to reflect and grow
  • Hold both students and staff accountable to clear and consistently high expectations
  • Creativity and being committed to collaborative leadership, while maintaining an accessible and open-minded approach to supporting the unique opportunities that the Dothan Brook School offers

Some of the responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work with students, families, DBS staff, the community, and other school counselors and administration to implement DBS’ student policies and procedures, including the implementation of attendance and discipline policies
  • Supervise and evaluate faculty and staff and monitor progress toward professional goals
  • Work to build positive relationships with the students of DBS through presence in classrooms, assemblies, public events, and more
  • Review trends in instruction and performance and remain up to date on the latest research to improve student achievement in respective content areas
  • Be a visible presence in all aspects of the school
  • Provide professional development for teachers and staff with regard to the teaching and assessing of all content areas and the use of data and research-based best practices to positively impact school performance
  • Build the capacity of educators to sustain student achievement through a process of continuous improvement
  • Support and collaborate with colleagues to identify needs and work together to support students
  • Learn and understand all school curricula
  • Perform necessary public relations functions
  • Monitor facility/maintenance needs and communicate with the HSD Maintenance and Custodial Departments to ensure those needs are met
  • Engage in a thoughtful annual budgetary process and connect resource allocation to strategic planning at the building and district level, including at the micro level in creating requisitions and purchase orders and managing fiscal responsibilities
  • Assist educators with integrating appropriate technology into the curriculum
  • Work to implement the District’s bullying/harassment and TIX investigative process and related policy and procedures
  • Lead and create thoughtful, purposeful agendas for faculty and staff meetings/committees/councils
  • Work and collaborate with colleagues on the District’s Administrative Council, including attending meetings and engaging in professional learning opportunities
  • During the school year, supervise the building, including bus arrival and departure, before and after school hours, including in-service days
    Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools
